Tourist overnight stays in Macedonia down 6% y/y in August 2012.

The number of tourist overnight stays in Macedonia decreased by 6% y/y to 591,874 in August 2012, after dropping by 8% y/y in July, according to data of the statistics office. On the positive side, overnight stays of foreign tourists expanded by 2.5% y/y to 119,174 in August, reversing a 0.1% y/y decline in July. However, overnight stays of domestic tourists decreased by 7.9% y/y to 472,700, a somewhat narrower decline than July's of 9.9%. The number of tourists fell by 3.2% y/y to 114,554 in August, after dropping by 2.4% y/y in the previous month. The August number includes 72,859 domestic tourists (down 6.8% y/y) and 41,695 foreign tourists (up 3.9% y/y). The largest numbers of foreign tourists came from the Netherlands (5,262), Turkey (5,238), and Serbia (4,577). In Jan-Aug, the number of overnights declined by 3% on the year to 1,719,011, while the number of tourists grew by 2.5% to 485,541. Overnights of foreign tourists were 6.1% higher on the year to 557,973 in Jan-Aug. A certain number of tourists and their overnight stays remain unregistered and are not included in the above figures since these tourists stay in private rooms, cottages or with relatives and friends.
