Slovenian retail chain operator Mercator plans to open two new supermarkets in Albania expanding its presence in the country and investing some EUR 1.1mn, the company said in a statement. Mercator entered the local market in late 2009, following an investment of EUR 1mn. The retailer currently operates two stores in the capital city of Tirana and one in Durres. Although Albanian retail trade market is highly scattered, it is attractive for international retailers since rapid market development and convergence with the European standards is expected in the future, Mercator said. French hypermarket chain Carrefour opened its first store in Albania in November 2011 and said it will launch more stores in other Albanian cities. The list of international retailers in Albania includes also Italys Conad and Euromax, part of Belgian food retailer Delhaize Group.
