The government has decided to allocate EUR 639mn in EU structural funds to finance the construction of highways and roads, the government said on its website. For the purpose the government plans to reallocate to operational program Transport the EU funds from several other operational programmes, as it seeks to reduce budget spending for road construction to below EUR 3.5bn. Some EUR 157mn will come from OP Informatisation of Society programme, EUR 119mn from OP Research and Development, EUR 61mn from OP Education, EU 30mn from OP Competitiveness and Economic Growth and EUR 23mn from OP Employment and Social Inclusion. Within the OP Transport, EUR 250mn will be shifted to road construction. The changes are expected to be approved by the government in the beginning of March. Then the transport minister should negotiate with the European Commission the planned reallocation of resources. It is expected that the Commission would answer in five months and then the assessment of the individual projects could start.
