Slovakia was ranked 36th out of 196 countries in the 2010 edition of global press freedom survey published by the independent watchdog organisation Freedom House. For comparison neighbouring Czech Republic ranked 26th, Austria was 32nd and Hungary occupied 65th position. Finland topped the list. The regional score of the Central and Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Union countries did not experience significant changes overall but the negative trend in Hungary caused an overall decline in the CEE ranking.
