EC President Jose Manuel Barroso said that Serbia could be granted EU candidate status by the end of the year, if it registers progress on the pre-accession conditions, Tanjug news agency reported. The EU official expressed hope that the country would achieve full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which is one of the condition for gaining EU candidate status. Following talks with top Serbian government officials, Barroso said he does not expect any new conditions to be set forth to the country on its EU accession road, such as Kosovo's recognition for example. He noted that Serbia's progress depended mainly on the country's readiness to implement the remaining reforms, such as judicial reform and the fight against organized crime and corruption. These reforms are a necessary precondition for the development of the country, Barroso stressed. |
