Sales of publisher Ringier Slovakia fall by 21% y/y in 2009.

Total sales of Swiss publishing house Ringier amounted to EUR 43.5mn in 2009, declining by 21% y/y, the company CEO Peter Mertus informed. He explained that the negative performance was on account of the economic crisis, which led to falling spending on advertising. This accounted for around 66% of the total decline in sales while the remaining part was due to lower product sales. Mertus noted that Ringier still held a relatively strong 24% share of the printed media market in 2009. He projected that the shrinking of the market would continue in 2010 as well although it would moderate in comparison to last year. In particular, both reader numbers and advertising were expected to decline by 5% y/y while a stabilisation and a slight improvement was to come only in 2011.
