The average life expectancy in Russia in the first half of this year was up by half a year to 72.4 years, according to Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets.

The vice-premier stressed that the increase in the average life expectancy was due to a decrease in mortality, reports Vedomosti.

"According to the results of the first half of 2017, the death rate decreased to 12.9 per 1,000 people," she said.

The press service of the deputy PM told Interfax that in the first half of 2016 the death rate was 13.2 per 1,000 people.
