New railroad between Kazakhstan and China opens.

By bne IntelliNews December 25, 2012
A new railroad connecting Kazakhstan and China was opened. The track is being composed of a 292-km section in China and a 293-km section in Kazakhstan. The two parts join at the Khorgos Pass in Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region. Total cost of the Chinese section amounted to USD 962mn. The value of the Kazakh part was not disclosed. The rail is expected to ease the burden of the Alataw trade pass, where the first railway between Central Asia and China crosses. Transshipment via this trade pass reaches 15.6mn tonnes of train-laden cargo. Cargo traffic at Khorgos is expected to reach 20mn tonnes in 2020 and 35mn tonnes by 2030. The railway is part of the New Silk Road idea which assumes transformation of Central Asia into a transit passage for goods exported from China to Europe. Khorgos itself is to become the key logistics hub with a network of highways, railways and pipelines. It is located 200 km away from Almaty and 670 m from Urumqi.
