NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated during his visit to Bosnia that the country could be invited to enter the final stage of accession to the military alliance once it fulfils the previously set conditions. He elaborated that they include changes to the election law, resolution of the military property issue, destruction of surplus ammunition, and deployment of BiH units in Afghanistan . We note that Bosnia was not invited to enter the so called Membership Action Plan (MAP) last December. The foreign ministers of NATO member countries decided then that the achieved progress by the country was insufficient. This way, Bosnia lagged behind neighbouring Montenegro , which was allowed to enter the MAP. Bosnia joined the Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme at end-2006, which is the first formal step on the path to membership in the alliance. In April/2008, the country entered into a new stage of its accession to the North-Atlantic alliance after NATO decided to accept it into the programme of Intensified Dialogue with the organisation. |
