Montenegro has made a significant progress and its efforts towards NATO membership will be kept under active review, the heads of states and governments of NATO countries said in a statement following their Chicago summit held on Sunday. Montenegro has been engaged in an Intensified Dialogue with NATO on its membership aspirations and related reforms since April 2008. The country was invited to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP) in December 2009. The Alliance praised Montenegro's contribution to security in the Western Balkans, the increasing public support for NATO membership in Montenegro and the country's active engagement in the MAP process. "Montenegro has successfully implemented significant political, economic and defence reforms", the statement said.
