Montenegros prime minister Milo Djukanovic is likely to announce his resignation at a press conference today, newswire seebiz.eu reported quoting top-ranking officials from the senior ruling party DPS. We note that there have been mounting speculations that Djukanovic will withdraw from his post once the country obtains an EU candidate country status. The EU council officially granted the status on Dec 17. Djukanovic has been considering withdrawal from active politics for years. He even refused to chair the new government about 4 years ago, but returned on the post in less than a year. Djukanovic is currently serving his fifth term as prime minister. He also served one term as President of Montenegro. Deputy PM Svetozar Marovic is also expected to resign. Igor Luksic, a deputy PM and finance minister is most likely to replace Djukanovic, while the minister without portfolio Dusko Markovic is likely to take the post of Marovic. More structural changes in the cabinet might take place, as Luksic has already hinted that a new ministry, responsible for EU integration, might be established. |
