The country might launch negotiations with the European Commission on joining the EU in October, EC President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso hinted during his speech at the European Parliament. The joint parliamentary meeting was dedicated to the Western Balkans. Barroso noted that Montenegro, as well as Serbia, is in position to move into next stage of negotiations if the reform efforts continue until October. As recalled, the European Parliament adopted last month a resolution acknowledging the Montenegro's good track record in implementing economic reforms and expressing hopes that the country could launch accession talks with the Union already this year. Montenegro applied for EU membership in December 2008 after signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the Union in October 2007. The country officially became a candidate country for EU accession on December 17, 2010. |
