Montenegrin Transmission System (CGES) signed an agreement with Italian electricity transmission system operator Terna for the construction of a submarine power cable to link Montenegro with Italy across the Adriatic, the government said in a statement on its website. The project, to cost EUR 760mn, will give Montenegro a direct access to the EU energy market and help for further investments in the sector. In addition, the project will also contribute to increased employment and will have a positive effect on the construction and transport industries. The interconnection cable between Montenegro and Italy will be 450 km long, 375 km of which will connect both sides of the Adriatic along the seabed, while some 75 km will be on the land. Terna will also build an additional grid infrastructure in the form of a 400kV interconnection cable between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina and/or an additional 400 kV cable between Montenegro and Serbia.
