The President of the European Commission (EC), Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, stated during his visit to Montenegro on Friday (Apr 8, 2011) that the country was on the right track. He expressed satisfaction with the commitment and the efforts demonstrated by Podgorica's authorities. Barroso pointed out that the achieved candidate country status was a fair recognition of Montenegro's achievements and emphasized that more work remains to be done, especially in the field of the rule of law. Barroso assessed positively the prepared by the authorities action plan for eliminating the shortcomings identified in the Commission's Opinion. He noted that fighting organised crime and corruption and strengthening judicial independence are of great importance to the business environment and thus in Montenegro's own interest. Barroso pledged the EC's support for the country in the process of EU accession and reconfirmed the enlargement perspective of the Western Balkans. |
