Kazakhstan posts surplus in electricity trade in 2009.

Kazakhstan posted surplus in electricity trade in 2009, the State Stat Agency has reported. The country exported 2.4bn kWh while imported 1.7bn kWh last year. This means surplus of 0.7bn kWh. To compare, in 2008, Kazakhstan posted 0.3bn kWh electricity deficit. That year, imports made up 2.8bn kWh and exports 2.5bn kWh. Electricity generation in Kazakhstan amounted to 78.7bn kWh last year, down by 2.3% in comparison to 2008. The reason for lower electricity generation is the economic crisis. The main electricity producing regions in Kazakhstan are: Pavlodar (42.9% in total country's electricity generation), Karaganda (15%) and East-Kazakhstan (8.8%).
