Kazakhmys invests USD 400mn to expand output at Kazakhstan's power plant.

Kazakhstan's leading miner Kazakhmys is going to speed output expansion at country's flagship electrical plant by investing of USD 400mn as central Asian demand for electricity continues to grow. By the end of 2014 Kazakhmys wants to boost power output at the Ekibastuz GRES-1 coal-fired power station to 3,500 megawatts. Since 2008 the company owned a 50% stake in the plant that is the biggest power generator in Kazakhstan. The aforementioned investment is said to accelerate the plant's USD 1bn investment program by 12 months. At the moment, the plant, where only five out of eight original turbines are operating, can produce 2,500 megawatts. The investment program will return the remaining three turbines to operation and restore the plant to its original capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
