The European Union decided on November 8 to lift visa requirements for citizens of Bosnia and Albania who have biometric passports with a digitally recorded photograph, the EU Council website informed. The decision will enter into force the day following the publication in the EU Official Journal. The European Parliament gave its approval to the visa liberalisation regime on Oct 7. EU enlargement commissioner Stefan Fule commented that the decision had proved that the reforms have a tangible effects and benefits for citizens. With this decision, the two countries join Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia that have already benefitted from the visa free regime since 19 December 2009. Still, the EU is to establish a follow-up mechanism to the visa liberalisation process for the Western Balkan countries in order to monitor the reforms which these countries need to continue to carry out. The mechanism will concern on one part the process of establishment of all the relevant standards, and on the other, early warning in the form of permanent dialogue on asylum seekers issue.
