The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group allocated €464mn for new projects in Croatia in 2023, benefiting over 1,000 SMEs and mid-caps and supporting 48,500 jobs, the Bank said in its press release on February 14.

Teresa Czerwińska, EIB vice-president, stated: "We are proud to have achieved a strong year of financing in Croatia."

EIB's activities in Croatia amounted to 0.61% of the country's GDP in 2023, mobilising investments worth nearly €1.15bn. The EIB board of directors approved a record €2.17bn for Croatian projects in various sectors, including sustainable urban development and railway systems.

The EIB focused on the green and digital transformation of Croatian businesses, cooperating with Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) to make €500mn available for SMEs, mid-caps and public sector entities. A guarantee agreement of €150mn between the EIB and Zagrebačka banka (ZABA) will make €300mn in new loans accessible.

Around €64mn was allocated to support SME investments in Croatia's green and digital transitions. The EIB also provided advisory services to enhance the green transition across sectors, including support for efficient transport systems and energy efficiency improvements in public buildings.

“Despite a positive investment outlook, Croatian firms face challenges, including access to finance and skilled staff. The EIB remains committed to supporting sound investments aligned with EU policy objectives, with a focus on sustainability and climate neutrality,” the bank stated.
