Sales of new personal computers in the Czech Republic increased by a fifth to 269,000 in the first quarter of 2012, driven by higher demand from businesses, CTK newswire reported citing data from IT research and advisory firm Gartner. Laptops dominated the market as they accounted for more than half of the total with sales of 158,000 units, or by 17% more than in the same period last year. Sales of desktop computers rose by a quarter to 111,000 units. Corporate clients bought 168,000 computers in January to March, up by 29% y/y, and sales to households were 9% higher on the year to 101,000 units. Hewlett-Packard was the market leader with sales of nearly 61,000 computers. Dell followed selling 34,000 computers, ahead of Lenovo with over 32,000 computers. In March, Gartner said it expects PC sales this year to grow by 16% y/y to 1.3mn units bringing a revenue of CZK 14.4bn (EUR 574mn), up from CZK 12.9bn in 2011. The market shrank by 20% last year as consumers cut back spending amid fears that the deepening eurozone crisis will hit their incomes. |
