The four men accused by Moscow of being behind March’s deadly terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall music venue have said they were promised safe passage to Ukraine and a financial award there.

In a video published on April 7 by Russian state media, the four men – all Tajik nationals – claim they were promised a reward of RUB1mn ($10,800).

However, the admissions, which match with Russia and the Kremlin’s official narrative, come with the four suspects displaying clear signs of abuse and torture, putting their veracity into question.

Following the attack on March 22, Islamic State claimed responsibility and published videos online as proof. Despite this, Moscow has pointed the finger at Ukraine. Kyiv has denied any involvement.

The escaping attackers were caught east of Moscow in the Bryansk region, which could be a point on the way to either Belarus or Ukraine.
