China to provide $250mn for new Tajik parliamentary building

China is to provide $250mn for the construction of a new and expensive parliamentary building in Tajikistan, CA-News reported on July 20.

Tajikistan is notorious for spending fortunes on constructing grandiose buildings, seen by critics as vanity projects. Examples include the $60mn Nowruz Palace and the $100mn construction of “the largest theatre”. The new government building is likely part of the same trend.

Earlier, Tajik authorities announced that they are to receive a $200mn from Saudi Arabia for the construction of multiple government buildings.

Other such projects blessed by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon include Central Asia’s tallest flagpole and its largest library.

Known as the “Leader of the Nation”, Rahmon is attempting to build a legacy image, while Tajikistan remains one of the most remittance-dependent countries in the world.

The regional economic slowdown has hurt the country’s population as well as its ailing banking sector.
