Bulgarian environment ministry has approved the environment impact assessment of the project for the construction of a 3.2 kilometres tunnel under the hill of Shipka in Stara Planina mountain, stretching across the country, investor.bg reported. The tunnel, part of the trans-European transport corridor 9, will ease the traffic at the Shipka pass connecting the southern city of Gabrovo with northern Bulgaria. The whole project, to be financed with EU funds under the countrys transport operational programme, comprises also construction of four smaller tunnels and ten bridges and is considered as technically and economically difficult to be realized. Environment minister Nona Karadzhova should review the assessment in a month.
