U.S. online retailer Amazon plans to expand its developer centre in South Africa and aims to hire 50 software engineers within a year to support the growth of companys cloud computing business, Business Day reported. Amazons South African unit is focused on software development and technical support, including cloud computing services. Amazon has increased its staff number tenfold since it opened its software developer centre in Cape Town about seven years ago. The company has two similar software development centres, one in Europe and one in the USA. In September 2011, Amazon said it would strengthen its presence in South Africa, by expanding its Cape Town customer service centre and its developer centre with the addition of 600 new full-time employees, and another 400 seasonal jobs during peak holiday times. Amazon opened its call centre in South Africa in 2010.
