Albania hikes electricity generation in Q1
By bne IntelliNews May 28, 2018

Net domestic production of electric power in Albania almost doubled y/y in the first quarter of 2018 to reach 3,213 GWh, up from just 1,588 GWh in the same period of 2017.

Albania and other countries in the Western Balkans were hit by drought last year, resulting in a sharp fall in hydropower production; Montenegro’s main power producer EPCG also recently announced a hike in hydropower generation in Q1. Albania generates virtually all of its energy from hydropower.

In Q1, state-owned hydropower plants accounted for 65% of net domestic production while private, independent and concessionaire power producers generated the remaining 35%, state statistics office Instat said

The growth in domestic power generation results allowed Albania to cut its electricity imports and boost exports, which were up around 6.3 times compared to Q1 2017.

Gross imports (including exchanges) stood at 114 GWh in Q1 compared to 621 GWh in Q1 2017, while gross exports reached 1,205 GWh.

Instat also reported that electrical losses increased slightly to 600 GWh from 594 GWh in Q1 2017, which was blamed on the increase of losses in distribution.

Consumption of electricity by both household and non-domestic users continued its steady upward trend, contributing 1.9pp and 5pp respectively to the overall increase.
