The government and the World Bank have completed negotiations on a USD 25mn Development Policy Loan to support policies that improve the social assistance and healthcare services in Albania, the bank said on its website. The loan, which is the World Banks first new one since 2008, will support poor families under certain conditions, Kseniya Lvovsky, the banks manager for Albania, said. Beneficiaries must guarantee that their children regularly attend school classes. The loan will also enable the establishment of a registry of beneficiaries of social assistance programs, which will increase efficiency and transparency. The World Bank also said it increased by USD 25mn to USD 300mn its support to Albania for 2011-2014 in response to the 2010 floods. We note that the bank has provided more than USD 1.6bn to finance 68 projects in Albania since 1991, when the country became a member of the international financial institution. |
