US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, says that the deterioration in the relationship between Israel and Turkey over the past year or so is a matter of concern. Gates furthers that the two countries had a constructive relationship and that contributed to stability in the region and hopefully that kind of constructive relationship can be re-established over time. Interestingly, Gates also asserts that he personally thinks if there is anything to the notion that Turkey is moving eastward, it is in no small part because it was pushed by some in Europe refusing to give Turkey the kind of organic link to the West that Turkey sought. On a related note, Turkey voted on Jun 9 against a UN Security Council resolution, backed by the US, imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme. As known, Turkey and Brazil worked together and struck a nuclear fuel swap deal with Iran last month in a bid to ease the row between Iran and the West. State minister and chief negotiator with the EU, Egemen Bagis dismisses the comments over a policy shift. Bagis argues that the ,,not" vote at the Security Council means that Turkey still favours a diplomatic solution but it does not mean that Turkey's policies have shifted. |
