US telecommunication services provider UNIFI announced on Monday an agreement with UK-based Interoute Communications, which is Europes leading data and voice network service provider. Under the agreement, Interoute will provide the landing solution in Italy for Albania's first competitive undersea fiber optic cable. This will enable UNIFI to market and sell many types of network services, including wholesale Internet transport, all types of other bandwidth services and dark fiber connectivity to Albania from Europe, UNIFI said. This is the the first phase of UNIFI's Balkans-Italy Network project, which will be launched in Albania in the beginning of 2011. UNIFI also plans to set up the first network access point in Albania, which will become a major network distribution point for the Balkan region. For this purpose the US firm plans to build additional terrestrial connectivity into the neighbouring Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. The extra capacity and resilience provided by this new cable will support new business growth and should encourage investment in the country, Interoute CEO Gareth Williams commented.
