US-based management and consultancy company A.T. Kearney has placed Albania on the 12th position in its 2010 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI). The annual study ranks the top 30 emerging economies for retail expansion, based on the assessment of 25 macroeconomic variables. Albania has been placed on top position among countries in the region, surpassing Turkey (18th), Bulgaria (19th), Macedonia (20th), Romania (28th) as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina (29th). Albanias ranking reflects the eased market access and the low risk for doing business. A.T. Kearney analyzed Albania as a small market with a positive perspective to grow. The food retail market is shaped by small independent shops, while the top three grocery retailers operate less than 30 stores. It is anticipated that the local economy will continue to grow on a fast pace in the mid-term, which will make the country an attractive destination for investments.
