Ukraine intends to expand the number of drilling rigs on the Black Sea shelf from two to five, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yurii Boiko announced. In addition to the Petro Godovanets drilling rig, the Chornomornaftohaz state enterprise based in Simferopol will receive another rig on November 1. There will be five drilling rigs to operate on 18 gas fields on the shelf. Moreover, another gas field was brought online in the Poltava region. It holds around 8bn m3 gas reserves. Chornomornaftohaz says this year drilling six new wells will produce an additional 155mn m3 of gas and by 2015 the company will increase its annual production from 1.1bn to 3bn m3 against the 41bn m3 that the country currently imports from Russia. Notably, PM Mykola Azarov, stated that the government is planning to pay particular attention to the development of projects to increase the production of Ukrainian gas, which is a priority on the road to energy independence.
