Lawyers for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko are suing the BBC for libel over a report in May that claimed he had allegedly secretly paid at least $400,000 to arrange a meeting in June last year between him and US President Donald Trump.

According to the report, the payment was arranged by intermediaries acting for Ukraine's leader though Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen with the aim to organise the meeting that was important for Poroshenko, who was keen to show solidarity between Washington and Kyiv.

The payment was not registered as a representative of Ukraine as required by US law. However, Cohen has denied the report.

Lawyers insist that the allegation is untrue and "strikes at the core of his personal dignity and integrity", according to the Telegraph.

In a High Court claim, lawyers for Poroshenko say the allegation was particularly damaging because he is actively involved in promoting anti-corruption measures in the Ukraine.

The president "has been seriously injured in his reputation and has been caused substantial distress and embarrassment," the claim reads. "The allegation that the claimant was guilty of serious corruption is self-evidently an extremely grave and serious one [...] It has also caused him considerable distress and embarrassment since the allegation strikes at the core of his personal dignity and integrity."
