Ukraine lowers gas imports by 1.3% y/y in January.

In January, Ukraine has lowered gas imports by 1.3% y/y to 2.5bn m3, the Energy ministry has announced. The gas consumption declined by 1.2% y/y to 7.6bn m3 in January. In January, Ukraine reduced natural gas transit by 23.2% y/y to 7.1bn m3. In 2012, Ukraine reduced gas transit by 19.13% to 84.26bn m3. Ukrtransgas company, which belongs to Naftogaz, is the operator of the Ukrainian gas transport system. Notably, PM Mykola Azarov stressed that Ukraine is not going to pay Russia USD 7bn for gas under-purchase in 2012. According to the Energy ministry, in 2012 Ukraine cut imports of natural gas by 26.5% y/y to 32.9bn m3. Almost the entire volume-except for 57mn m3-came from Russia to Naftogaz and Ostchem Holding Limited. Supplies to Ostchem Holding made round 8bn m3. Under the contract for gas supplies, Gazprom and Naftogaz signed in 2009, Naftogaz must import at least 33.3bn m3 gas a year. President Viktor Yanukovych also considers Gazprom's claim disputable.
