Turkey's manufacturing activity recorded its best overall improvement since March 2011, latest Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey data for August shows, IHS Markit said on September 5. The country's manufacturing PMI rose to a 77-month high of 55.3 from 53.6 in July.

“Manufacturing new orders rose for the sixth successive month in August while the rate of expansion quickened since July... Survey data continued to signal that domestic new business increased more sharply than new export orders,” IHS Markit added.

The rate of manufacturing output growth strengthened for the third time in four months as companies expanded capacity to meet output requirements.

Employment growth also accelerated compared to July, while purchasing activity increased at the fastest rate since November 2013.

“Input price inflation accelerated for the first time since December 2016 in August, reaching its highest since May. Similarly, output price inflation quickened for the first time in seven months,” IHS Markit said.

Much of Turkey's new growth has been attributed to the state's near-exhausted TRY250bn ($72.3bn) credit guarantee fund (CGF). Economists are divided over the quality of the lending with some analysts worried Turkey may be on the road to a Greek-style economic collapse.
