Tashkent proposes JV to take charge of construction of China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway

Uzbekistan has proposed establishing a joint venture that would be responsible for the construction and management of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (CKU) railway, Railway Supply reported on March 13.

Both Beijing and Bishkek reportedly support this initiative from Tashkent.

There remain concerns, however, that raising the finance for the multi-billion-dollar rail line—which would require scores of expensive-to-deliver tunnels and bridges through mountainous territory in Kyrgyzstan and China—may remain out of reach, especially given China’s diminishing commitment to foreign direct investment (FDI) in Central Asia amid its economic difficulties.

Kyrgyzstan had planned to commence construction of its section of the railway in Autumn 2023, but, with financing still in question, the plan fell through.
