Russia's internet major Yandex and the government of the federal republic of Tatarstan signed an agreement on development of driverless transportation, under which Yandex will create a test zone for driverless vehicles in Innopolis, the satellite city and special economic zone of Tatarstan's capital Kazan, according to Kommersant daily citing the company's representatives on August 28.

Yandex is actively developing in transportation segments, with the major join venture between its Yandex.Taxi and Uber in Russia and CIS, as well as other services in carsharing and carpooling markets

Yandex has been developing driverless technologies since 2016 and now the company might launch the first regular driverless transportation route in Europe in Innopolis.

Reportedly the route will serve five passenger pick-up stops nearby key city's objects and infrastructure. The test drive will start with two driverless vehicles, which will still have a supervisor on board behind the steering wheel.

Notably, a legal base developed in Tatarstan allowing the circulation of driverless vehicles will set precedents for other cities. Previously Yandex has signed a memorandum on driverless technology development with the City of Moscow.
