Romania slips to lower position in 2010 global corruption index.

By bne IntelliNews October 27, 2010
Romania's 2010 corruption perception index deteriorated for the first time since 2002, the newest report of Transparency International showed. The index, which reflects the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and politicians, decreased to 3.7 from 3.8 in the previous year, Transparency International Romania reported. Among the EU member states, Romania ranks 25th, followed by Greece and Bulgaria. The deterioration marks abandonment of reforms and lower interest in the political factors, involved in reducing corruption, the head of Transparency International Romania, Victor Alistar, explained. The fact that the National Anticorruption Strategy has not been updated since 2007 has contributed to the worsening of the index, as well. According to Alistar, this has a negative impact on foreign investors' confidence at a critical moment when their risk aversion is already high.
