Romanias external debt increased by 10.3% y/y to EUR 91.8bn at the end of February, according to central bank data. The private sectors external debt amounted to EUR 64.6bn and its share decreased to 70% of the total from 74% one year earlier after a 6% y/y expansion. The medium and long-term external private debt shrank by 3.2% y/y to EUR 37.25bn at the end of February; while the short-term debt and the non-residents deposits increased. The public sector external debt on the opposite soared by 24% y/y to EUR 27.2bn and its share increased to 30% of the total from 26% one year earlier. The replacement of the private sector external debt with public external debt, visible over the past couple of years, occurred amid the external financing extended by IMF and EC to the central bank and government.
