Romania, Bulgaria sign agreement on energy markets integration.

By bne IntelliNews December 2, 2010
Romanian economy minister Ion Ariton and his Bulgarian counterpart Traycho Traykov signed a memorandum for integration of the two countries' energy markets, Agerpres reported. A natural gas interconnector will be built between the two countries' domestic distribution networks, while their power grids will be connected through higher capacity lines. The national gas transportation firms Bulgartransgaz and Transgaz have already drafted the project for the gas pipeline that would be backed with EUR 8.9mn from the EU, Evenimentul Zilei informed. The interconnector will have a length of 23.8km and a capacity of 1.5bn cubic metres per year. Romania covers some 60-80% of its natural gas needs from own resources, while Bulgaria depends to a much higher extent on imports. The project should be commissioned by the end of 2011, Novinite informed. The linking of the national power grids is apparently at an early stage as no specific details were released except for Romania's interest in exporting electricity toward Bulgaria and to other countries in the region. The two ministers also discussed the construction of a joint hydro power plant on the Danube. Romania currently operates such a plant with Serbia.
