US intelligence agencies do not believe that the death of Alexey Navalny was ordered by President Vladimir Putin, the Wall Street Journal has reported.
Navalny, the most prominent Russian opposition figure for a number of years, died in prison in February 2024. He was serving a 19-year prison sentence at a colony in the village of Kharp in the Arctic.
Following his death, numerous officials in the EU and the US blamed Putin for Navalny’s death, with some suggesting that he had ordered him to be killed. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, US intelligence agencies now believe that it was not ordered by the Kremlin. This assessment, shared by agencies including the CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, suggests that Putin probably didn't orchestrate Navalny's death "at that moment.”
The US intelligence assessment, based on a combination of classified intelligence and analysis of public facts, considers factors such as the timing of Navalny's death and its potential implications for Putin's re-election.
Separately, citing its own sources, the Associated Press news agency reported that the intelligence community had found “no smoking gun” implicating Putin.
Navalny's allies have dismissed the notion that Putin was unaware or uninvolved in Navalny's death, with close Navalny ally Leonid Volkov describing the idea as "ridiculous."
