Romania meets all provisions of the Schengen acquis set under the EU Accession Treaty and adding new requirements is discriminatory, Mediafax reported, quoting a publicly broadcast statement of President Traian Basescu. The President addressed the issue after French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux and German counterpart Thomas de Maiziere requested delay of Romania's entry in the Schengen agreement, scheduled for March 2011, in a letter to EU home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem. EU experts, who have visited Romania and Bulgaria to assess their readiness to join the Schengen zone, will present their conclusions in a report in January. A country can enter the Schengen zone only with the unanimous approval of all members. |
