If a referendum on Ukraine's joining NATO had been held soon, 58.3% of Ukrainians, who were polled by the Oleksandr Razumkov Center in May 2010, would have opposed their country's membership of NATO. At the same time, 17.4% of citizens would have voted for Ukraine's membership of NATO, 9% of respondents said they would not have voted at the referendum, and 15.3% of respondents failed to answer. During the survey conducted in the framework of a Ukrainian-Spanish project, entitled "Ukraine in the System of European Security: Challenges and Prospects," respondents were also asked how Ukraine should act with respect to NATO. Some 44.5% of Ukrainians called for Ukraine's refusal to join NATO, and 18.9% said that the country, without accelerating the accession process, should focus on the effective implementation of its annual national programs and strengthen cooperation with NATO, accompanied by a respective information campaign. Some 10.2% of those polled proposed intensifying the negotiation process on the country's accession to NATO, 8% called for the weakening of cooperation with the alliance, 2% of Ukrainians named their own options for the development of relations, and 16.4% were undecided. The survey was conducted in all Ukrainian regions on May 15-20. A total of 2,014 respondents aged over 18 were surveyed. The poll's margin of error does not exceed 2.3%.
