The number of tourists visiting Albania rose to 3.5mn in 2010 from some 3mn in the previous year, tourism minister Ferdinand Xhaferri was quoted by Albanian Daily News. The government, which is now drafting a new law on tourism, considers the possibility of introducing a lower VAT on tourism companies in support of the local industry, Xhaferri said. We note that tourist operators have repeatedly urged the government to reduce the VAT rate to 8% from the current 20%. The government has recently introduced preferential VAT rates on healthcare and information and communication technologies.
