Number of registered unemployed in Macedonia down 13.4% at end-2012.

By bne IntelliNews March 7, 2013
The number of registered unemployed in Macedonia decreased by 13.4% y/y to 243,403 at end-December, according to data of the employment agency. The annual drop narrowed from 13.5% at end-November. In monthly terms, the number of registered unemployed contracted by 0.7% both at end-December and end-November. A total of 8,437 persons exited the unemployment lists in December and this figure included 3,017 people who entered labour relations. We should note that the statistics office reports each quarter survey-based estimates of the number of the employed and unemployed, as well as the respective unemployment rate. As the chart shows, the statistics office data have been consistently more unfavourable than the registrations-based numbers of unemployed. We strongly prefer the statistics office data as a basis for the calculation of an unemployment rate (it was 30.6% in Q3 2012).
