The number of passengers at Sofia Airport rose 4.6% y/y to 866,786 in Q1, the airport said in a statement.

The passengers on international regular routes went up 6% y/y to 792,712. A number of airlines contributed to the good result, including Wizz Air, Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways and LOT Polish Airlines, the airport commented.

The number of passengers on domestic routes fell 3.1% y/y to 26,425. The number of organised tourists using charter flights dropped 15% y/y to 43,710. The airport commented that the continuing decrease in this category is the result of more direct routes to Sofia, including such by low cost air carriers.

The number of flights serviced by the airport climbed 4.3% y/y to 9,834 in Q1. The airport processed 4,122 tonnes of cargo and mail, up 2.2% y/y.

In March alone, the number of passengers grew 4.2% y/y to 304,995 and the number of flights rose 6.1% y/y to 3,441.
