Number of fixed-line telephone subscribers in Albania down 4.2% ytd in H1 2012.

The number of fixed-line telephone subscribers in Albania decreased by 4.2% ytd to 327,720 as of end-June 2012, data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) showed. Fixed-line penetration reached 11.5% at end-June 2012, down 0.5pps ytd. Albanias incumbent operator Albtelecom lost approximately 15,000 subscriptions in the first six months of 2012, or 5.8% of its customer base. Its market share in the fixed telephony market dropped by 1.3pps to 75.1% as of June 2012. On the other hand, the number of clients attracted by alternative operators increased by 1.2% ytd to some 81,000. The rapid expansion of mobile communications in Albania and the reduction of tariffs on GSM services have had a major impact on the landline telephony market. The number of mobile phone subscribers in Albania reached 5.29mn at end-June 2012, up 1% ytd. A total of 188,535 subscriptions in Albania were registered as broadband internet users, including the fixed and mobile segments. Dominant landline operator Albtelecom is a current market leader with a 34.7% share on the broadband market, followed by ABCom (15.6%) and Vodafone Albania (13.7%).
