Suspects in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in East Ukraine three years ago will be prosecuted in a court in the Netherlands, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 5.
No suspects were named in the destruction of the airliner by a July 17, 2014, as it flew to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. All 298 people from 17 countries on board died.
However, an international criminal investigation conducted by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) found in 2016 that the jet was shot down by a Buk anti-aircraft missile launched from rebel-held territory in East Ukraine.
The JIT’s report said the missile system was brought into Ukraine from Russia shortly before the MH17 was shot down and taken back to Russia shortly afterwards. Russia denies any involvement in the tragedy, and rejected efforts by the Netherlands to form a United Nations as politicised.
“We’re still seeing a great deal of disinformation and attempts to discredit the investigation” by the JIT, Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said in a statement on July 5. “Nevertheless, major results have been achieved.” The ongoing criminal investigation “enjoys virtually unanimous support from the international community,” he added.
According to the minister, the decision to conduct the trial in a Dutch court was made by the countries jointly investigating the crash – the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, and Ukraine. Those countries will continue to cooperate on the prosecution and that the trial will cover all of the victims.
“In this way, the JIT countries are jointly heeding the UN Security Council’s call to hold those responsible for this incident to account,” Koenders said. “We have every confidence that we can continue to count on broad international support. And I will continue to do my utmost to ensure that this remains the case.”
