South Africa-based MTN, the biggest mobile operator in Africa, has been named the most valuable brand in South Africa in the Brand Finance Top 50 South African Brands survey with a global value of ZAR 43.3bn (EUR 4.1bn), Business Day reported. MTN, which continues to expand its presence across Africa and the Middle East, is also the only South African brand in the Brand Finance Global 500 survey. In South Africa, MTN is followed by its rival Vodacom, a unit of British Vodafone. Two of the so called big four banks come at the third and fourth places - Standard Bank and Absa, a unit of British Barclays. Fifth is energy and chemicals group Sasol, followed by the other two big banks Nedbank and First National Bank. Eighth comes Africas biggest food retailer Shoprite, followed by investment banking and asset management group Investec and hospital group Netcare in the top 10. Last week, MTN was also ranked Africas most valuable brand in the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2012 survey, becoming the first and only African brand to join the list at position 88.
