Macedonias economy ministry signs concessions for 21 small hydropower plants.

Macedonias economy ministry signed concession agreements envisaging the construction of 21 small hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 23 MW, state news agency MIA reported. The agreements were signed with two Italian and eight Macedonian companies. The hydropower plants have a projected annual output of 87 GWh. The construction will take place over the next three years. The investment cost is estimated at EUR 40mn. Economy minister Valon Saraqini said that the plants will be built at the rivers Bistrica, Pena, Brza Voda, Kriva Reka, Odranska, Beloviska, Baciska and Jablanica. The yesterdays signing brings the total number of concession agreements for small hydropower plants to 68. The minister added that over the period 2007-2011, some 47 agreements had been signed, involving hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 34.7 MW and annual output of 140 GWh. This is the last such procedure to be carried out by the economy ministry. According to Macedonias Law on Waters, the next procedure for awarding concessions for hydropower generation will be implemented by the ministry of environment and physical planning.
