Macedonia's population census suspended.

By bne IntelliNews October 11, 2011
The members of Macedonia's state census commission have submitted their irrevocable resignations, a release on the website of the body informs. In the same release, it was recommended that all regional census commissions suspend all activities in connection with the ongoing population census and wait for instructions from Macedonia's statistics office. The census was launched on Oct 1 and was scheduled to be completed on Oct 15. At its session on Oct 10, the commission concluded that the basic conditions for further administration of the census have not been met. Thus, the body believes that the census cannot provide relevant data. On Sep 30, Vesna Janevska, chairman of the state census commission resigned. Shortly before the launch of the census, resignations were also submitted by commission deputy chairperson Abdulmenaf Bexheti, one commission member from the ethnic Albanian minority, as well as three ethnic Macedonian members of the commission. On Sep 30, they were all replaced by the government and the census was launched the following day. However, after the latest resignations and the suspension of the process, ruling VMRO-DPMNE said that if the commission thinks that it is better to stop the census rather than have an illegal, irregular and biased census, then they understand them and such an action is justified. Meanwhile, Dnevnik daily quoted information from Kanal 5 TV station that the ruling coalition partners have already agreed to terminate the statistical operation.
