Macedonia mulls strategy for fight against poverty.

The labour ministry is currently drafting a national strategy for fight against poverty and social exclusion, the ministry announced at a news conference. The preparation is in its final stage and is encompassing the moat vulnerable social groups in lines with the ministrys policy over the past years, minister Dzeljalj Bajrami said. Bajrami also pointed out the need fro such a strategy in the context of the countrys application for EU membership. The strategy promotes ass the governments two main instruments against poverty the higher employment and the better education and training. The unemployment rate has dropped 1.6pps y/y to 32.2% in 2009, data from the annual labour force report of the statistics office showed. The labour force numbered 928,775, of whom 67.8% were employed. The unemployment dynamics showed that the lowest rate since the countrys independence was in 2001 when it stood at 30.9% and the highest was in 2003 37.6%. The poverty rate in 2008, which is the latest available data from the statistics office, stood at 30.2%.
