Macedonia drops two places to 73rd in economic freedom ranking.

Macedonia ranked 73rd out of 144 countries covered in the latest annual Economic Freedom of the World report published by Canadas Fraser Institute. The country ranked 71st in the previous report. The ranking is based on an economic freedom index that "measures the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries are supportive of economic freedom." The index is on a scale from 0 to 10 and its value for Macedonia is 6.94 in the latest report, improving from 6.91 a year ago. The latest report is based on data for 2010. The index measures economic freedom in five different areas. The areas, and Macedonias latest rankings across them, are size of government (90th); legal system and property rights (84th); sound money (87th); freedom to trade internationally (65th); and regulation (16th). Within the SEE region, Macedonia compares favourably with Croatia (84th), Slovenia (92nd), Bosnia (93rd) and Serbia (102nd). On the other hand, Macedonia lags behind Montenegro (28th), Albania (42nd) and Bulgaria (45th).
